Construction Inheritance (2015-2017) Erasmus+ Program

The European Project Construction Inheritance address the preservation of knowledge that the senior professionals in the construction sector have, in processes, materials and traditional tools for building restoration, through transferring it to young workers.

Training Tools

Designation: Construction Inheritance. Transfer of know-how from older construction workers to younger ones.

Project: Belonging to the European Union Erasmus+ Program, 2015 Call, of the Key Action 2 of Cooperation for Innovation and the exchange of Good Practices.

Project identification: 2015-1-ES01-KA202-016031.

Duration: 24 months, since October 2015 until September 2017.

Budget: 246.240 €.

The restoration works and refurbishment in public buildings and housing in Europe are on the rise. Currently, this type of works exceed in monetary terms the construction of new building, which entail a sectorial change trend regarding to previous stages which, in addition, has revealed a generational dilemma.

Thanks to many years of experience, senior workers in the construction sector have a precious knowledge about restoration of older buildings and about methods and tools for artisanal work. With the impending retirement of those professionals, this knowledge risk of being lost for good.

Profession living memory

The Project will take into account knowledge transfer relating to processes, materials and techniques applied in real refurbishment works, a European architectural heritage which will be the basis for the development of training contents and its subsequent and formative learning products.

One of this products will be an application for mobile devices (smartphones and tablets) for entertainment, which will be used as a complement for the existent training in the national systems of FP; and which will help to improve trainees’ skills in restoration activities in European countries.

To back a European industry of sustainable and competitive construction will deliver great benefits to the European Union economy and to society in general. Furthermore, in this respect, Construction Inheritance contribute the respect and custody of traditional knowledge which is so necessary for the future development.

Main objectives

This European Project aims at very ambitious objectives to achieve:

  • To provide young workers a quality training in rehabilitation techniques to ensure a correct restoration of traditional elements, especially in older buildings, to ensure a stable supply of workforce and to support the generational replacement which allows to accomplish market demands and global challenges such as energy efficiency and climate change.
  • To develop, analyse and implement an online training course designed for an app that works in mobile devices, considering intergenerational transfer of knowledge and taking into account the processes, techniques and materials for older building restoration.
  • To compile all key knowledge considering traditional processes of building restoration and, this way, avoid the loss of valuable knowledge in the sector thus, guaranteeing preservation of Europe buildings.
  • To manage key knowledge acquisition, skills and competences for rehabilitation works in all Europe through a common learning system with referential tools and common accreditations.
  • To develop some educational sources opened to transfer knowledge in traditional arts in and the construction sector that experimented professionals have, to young workers.
  • To increase labour expectations of trainees through the improvement in competences and to make the construction sector much appealing, sustainable and competitive.
